The San Diego Association of Black Journalists celebrated its eighth annual scholarship receptionĀ Friday, handing out scholarships to high school and college students to continue to build careers in journalism.

Recipients were joined by members of the community, family, friends, SDABJ members and other local media professionals.

Lincoln High School journalism teacher Daniel Camacho received the largest award for the night, a full ride scholarship for a Masters degreeĀ  from National University.

Joseph Young was awarded the Ozzie Roberts scholarship. Jarred Powell and Jennifer Bowman received community college scholarships while Strongman Osom, a senior at Point Loma High School, got the SDABJ scholarship.

In total, more than $50,000 in scholarships were handed out.

Awards were also handed to young photographers Katelyn Griffin and Shannon Edwards for top pictures in our first photo contest.
