Brandi Powell

Brandi Powell is a Reporter with NBCUniversal. She became a part of the NBC 7

San Diego team on October 24, 2011. While at NBC 7, Powell has distinguished herself as a leader in live and breaking news reporting. She is an on-air contributor with “Politically

Speaking”, NBC 7’s weekly public affairs program.

Prior to joining NBC 7 San Diego, Powell earned her Master of Arts degree in Anthropology, with a concentration in International Development, at George Washington University in Washington, DC.

Before graduate school, Powell worked as a Reporter/Bell County Bureau Chief/Video Journalist with News 8 Austin (Time Warner). She was charged with launching a bureau to cover Fort Hood military base.

Prior to News 8 Austin, Powell was the Political Reporter with KFYR-TV (NBC Affiliate) in North Dakota’s capital, Bismarck. She covered North Dakota’s legislative session and statewide elections. She conducted live interviews with: Presidential Candidates (John Edwards and Ron Paul), U.S. Senators and Congressmen, and the U.S. Secretary of Agriculture. She won a North Dakota Associated Press award for her political reporting.

Also while at the NBC Affiliate in Bismarck, Powell was on assignment for two weeks in Guatemala. In her series “Guatemala: A Global Humanity”, she reported on political, educational and agricultural issues in Guatemala, via North Dakota’s ‘The God’s Child Project’. She won a North Dakota Associated Press award for her international series.

Powell began her career as a Production Assistant at MSNBC .

In addition to earning her Master of Arts in Anthropology, she earned a Bachelor of Arts in Communication Studies from University of Nevada, Las Vegas. She was in UNLV’s Honors College and was a McNair Scholar.

Powell also studied abroad in Salamanca, Spain and Barcelona, Spain. She is conversational in Spanish.

Powell is a member of National Association of Black Journalists and San Diego Association of Black Journalists.
