What a year this has been!

I think years from now when we look back, I think a lot of us will think of 2009 as the year that everything changed.
Now the question is, is this change for the better or for worse?
I don’t recall in my nearly 20 years in the media business a year quite like this one.
Newspapers have closed. Magazines have folded. Tons of good, hard-working journalists have lost careers.
Despite all of that, I still have hope for the future of journalism.
For those of us in SDABJ, the future begins now as we begin planning for the National Association of Black Journalists 35th Annual Job Fair and Convention to be held here in San Diego from July 28-Aug. 1.
We’re hoping that this will be the BEST. Convention. Ever! for NABJ and we’re putting our all as we’re brainstorming ideas and thinking outside the box.
Next year is also the 10-year anniversary of SDABJ and we’re also cooking up some exciting activities to celebrate in addition to the NABJ convention.
Our convention, won’t be the same old, same old as we’re working give some of the hardest working journalists in the country an experience they can remember. And we want to give them training and support they can take back to their newsrooms across the country.
We know that we’re in the grips of one of the worst economic periods in history. People are holding on to money tightly as they’re unsure of their financial future.
We get that.
We also want people to know that coming to the NABJ Convention in San Diego will be a wise investment in their future because they’ll leave here with skills that we help them fly higher in their careers. It’ll also give them the support and confidence they need if they want to venture out and do their own thing.
The motto of San Diego is “America’s Finest City” but we at SDABJ are committed to giving NABJ “America’s Finest Convention.”
Stay tuned for updates on what we’re planning and please follow us on Facebook and Twitter because the best is yet to come.
Serving you,
Jerry McCormick
SDABJ President
