Apply for the 2021 SDABJ Journalism Scholarship Program

In an age when journalism is coming under fire, the San Diego Association of Black Journalists is more committed than ever to developing the next generation of journalists. In the 21 years since SDABJ was formed we have disbursed over $60,000 in scholarships to deserving students with ties to the San Diego community. Students with qualifying transcripts and a body of work that indicates a high level of interest in journalism will be considered for scholarships ranging from $300 to $1500. The application deadline is Friday April 30, 2021.

2021 Scholarship Application

  • SDABJ offers three scholarships to students interested in journalism.

    Two $1,000 scholarships will be awarded will be awarded to high school seniors who are interested in majoring in journalism and/or mass communication at a four-year college or university. Applicants must provide the following by the stated deadline: 1. Examples of work 2. Letter of recommendation by journalism academic adviser 3. Parental consent if applicant is under 18 years of age (see acknowledgment below) 4. Proof of enrollment from a four-year college or university to receive funds for this scholarship. SDABJ reserves the right to delay funding of scholarship until the end of the first semester.

    A $300 community college scholarship is available for students who are either currently enrolled or looking to attend community college, taking journalism and/or mass communication courses, and interested in pursuing a career as a journalist. Must provide proof of enrollment.

    Finally, the $1,500 Ozzie Roberts scholarship will be awarded to a student currently enrolled in a four-year college or university who is majoring or minoring in journalism and/or mass communication.
