The San Diego Association of Black Journalists is thrilled to announce Washington Post national reporter, Wesley Lowery will be this year’s keynote speaker at our scholarship reception. Wesley Lowery is a Pulitzer Prize-winning national correspondent covering law enforcement, race and justice for The Washington Post and an on-air contributor for CNN. He has been the paper’s lead reporter covering police shootings and the Black Lives Matter protest movement. His work has also appeared in the Boston Globe, the Los Angeles Times, the Wall Street Journal and Sports Illustrated. Lowery helped to spearhead the Post’s Fatal Force project, which developed a database that tracked 990 police shootings in 2015. Before this database, the federal government was not in possession of comprehensive data covering fatal police encounters. In 2016, the project was awarded the Pulitzer Prize for National Reporting. He is also the author of the New York Times bestseller “They Can’t Kill Us All,” which was awarded the 2017 Christopher Isherwood prize for autobiographical prose by the Los Angeles Times Book Prizes. Conducting hundreds of interviews during the course of over one year reporting on the ground, Lowery traveled from Ferguson, Missouri, to Cleveland, Ohio; Charleston, South Carolina; and Baltimore, Maryland; and then back to Ferguson to uncover life inside the most heavily policed, if otherwise neglected, corners of America today.
