Worth a Thousand Words

2020 has proven itself to be a year for the history books already and we are only halfway through. It is not often journalists lives are intimately affected by the stories they cover. COVID-19 and the demands for accountability from law enforcement in the deaths of George Floyd, Breonna Taylor and countless other African-Americans have taken a toll on many journalists but Black journalists in particular. However, there is light at the end of the tunnel. Eyes are opening to the injustice. Communication is opening up as people from all walks of life are finally recognizing what we have known all along. And they want to help.

The Voice of San Diego, a non-profit investigative news organization approached SDABJ with an offer we couldn’t refuse. VOSD photographer Adriana Heldiz captured an image of a local protest that epitomizes the hope we all wish for the future. VOSD has generously offered to sell copies of this photo and share the profits with SDABJ. and while a picture is worth a thousand words it means so much more to SDABJ. The money raised in this effort will go to directly to scholarships for deserving students like our 2020 recipients.

This is how change happens. This is how we ensure the future of journalism includes voices of the unheard. This is how we work together to bridge the gap between the African American community and the media. Thank you, Voice of San Diego, for allowing us to fulfill our mission.
