More than 35 aspiring journalists got a taste of the real world of making news on Saturday, October 20.  SDABJ in collaboration with Southwestern   College’s Journalism and TV production programs, offered a day of practical experience working along side many of San Diego’s pros.

The day began with a panel discussion with Larry Graham of UT-TV, Danya Bacchus of NBC 7, Khari Johnson from the Imperial Beach Patch, Keli Dailey of the UT San Diego, Donna M Stewart from NBC 7, and Booker T Crenshaw from SeaWorld. Varying degrees of experience allowed the panelists to regale the students with stories from what life was like in the good old days to how technology has changed the business. After a quick primer, the junior J’s attended a mock mayoral debate.

They were given real deadlines and and produced stories for broadcast and online/print. Three of the students tried their hands at public relations and created press releases while the entire day was documented by photojournalists. It was a long, fun, educational day for all.

Check out all their fine work here.
