April 28, 2017 – Member of the Year award winner Omari Fleming at the San Diego Association of Black Journalists’ “Intimate Evening with HLN’s Michaela Pereira” 2017 student scholarship reception. Students Gregory Blackshear, Caleb Danielson, Dylana Guyon, Cristal Martinez and Cianna Platt were recognized.
Omari Fleming joined SDABJ in 2014 when he moved from Philly to San Diego to become a part of the NBC 7 team. He immediately knew he was among family and fit right in with our small but mighty group. Omari brought passion, expertise, and the enthusiasm necessary to fulfill the San Diego Association of Black Journalists mission statement, which includes paving the 
way for the next generation of journalists. The respect and love he has earned from colleagues over the years lead to a close relationship with Michaela Pereira, host of HLN’s MichaeLA. She never hesitated when we made our request to have her be our keynote speaker because she knew if Omari was asking, it was important. Her presence lead to one of the most exciting and inspiring events that SDABJ has ever put on. SDABJ is proud to honor Omari as the 2017 Jerry McCormick SDABJ Member of the year.
